SUBJECT:
EVALUATION OF QUALIFICATION TEST REPORTS FOR CLASS IE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS The enclosed list of test reports on environmental qualification of class IE electrical components have been referenced by licensees of operating facilities in their responses to IE Bulletin 79-01.
Since it is our understanding that only a few of the test reports have been accepted by the NRC (identified in NUREG-0390 Vol. 3, No.1 dated July 15,1979),
we request that the acceptability of the test methods for the remaining reports be evaluated on an expedited basis.
We request that you identify an NRR contact for this effort and your planned schedule for evaluations.
In the evaluation please state the effect of the new guidelines and criteria upon tne previously ~ accepted ust; reports.
The IE inspections at the licensee's facilities are not expected to be affected by your schedule; however, the final evaluation will be.
The purpose of the site inspection is to verify that all of the components in the sampled system have been includsd in the licensee's review and that the physical installation of these components in the system has not compromised the environmental qualification of the component. The IE inspections are intended to concentrate on field verification of all components in a selected system or train of a safety system at a given facility.
If no significant discrepancies are identified in the sample at a specific facility, no further sampling will be required; however, if discrepancies are found, then additfonal inspection will be required on a case by case basis.
It is expected that the selection of inspection samole;will include different systems at similar facilities to provide the maximum opportunity for problem discovery.
