Zion Station Units 1 and 2 Additional Information on Fire Protection NRC Docket Nos. 50-295 and 50-304 Reference (a):

March 10, 1978 letter from A.

Schwencer to Cordell Reed containing NRC Safety Evaluation Report on Fire Protection Amendments for Zion Station Units 1 and 2

Dear Mr. Denton:

Per Section 3.1.4 of Reference (a), the Zion Station Units 1 and 2 Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report (SER),

Commonwealth Edison Company was required to provide the NRC additional design information on an asterisked item which involved installation of automatic fire suppression systems in the areas of the renote shutdown panels, auxiliary feed pumps and camponent cooling pumps.

In discussions with the NRC Staff, apparently certain design drawings and information on this item were not transmitted to the NRC Staff.

The appropriate information is contained in this letter.

Attached are Chemtron drawings, FL27652-7 sheets 1 through 5, which provide the design details for the fire suppression systems to be installed for the Au:tiliary Feedwater Pumps and the Component Cooling Pumps.

The Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps will be protected with an automatic CO-2 local application system for the two motor-driven pumps.

A second automatic CO-2 local application system will be installed for the steam-driven pumps.

t Commonwealth Edison NRC Docket Nos. 50-295/304 Mr. Harold R. Denton: May 23, 1979 The Component Cooling Pumps will be protected with two automatic CO-2 local application systems for the five pumps.

The middle pump will be included in each system to provide overlapping protection.

Commonwealth Edison has been determined that it is not practical to apply a fire suppression system to the four remote shutdown panels because of the panel design and location.

There are, however, no significant combustibles in the immediate vicinity of the shutdown panels.

The nearest external hazard is the Emergency Feedwater Pumps, which are protected with an automatic suppression system.

However, in order to minimize the possiblity of fire damage, all associated cable trays will have covers installed, and fire stops will be located where the covers end.

The covers will end at a point where the cable trays are separated by approximately five feet.

This will prevent flame propagation, either to or fram the Remote Shutdown Panels via the cable trays.

In addition, fire detectors have been installed in the Remote Shutdown Panel area, which will sense and alarm in the control Room for any fire in the area.

Portable extinguishers and a hose station are also available to extinguish a fire should one occur.

Please address any additional questions that you might have to this office.

One (1) signed original and thirty-nine (39) copies of this letter are provided for your L3e.

Per discussions with the NRC Staff, only three (3) copies of the design drawings are included.

Very truly yours, William F. Naugh n
