Subject:

Virgil C. Suc=er Nuclear Station Docket No. 50-395 Seismic Monitoring

Dear Mr. Denton:

This letter supplements information contained in my letter of Novenber 2, 1978, notifying you of a seismic event occurring on -

October 27, 1978, which was recorded by the seismic networks of the Applicant and the United States Geological Survey.

The October 27, 1978 seismic event was recorded by the Applicant's seismic network and was rated a Richter magnitude.of approximately 2.8.

The epicenter of this earthquake has now been detemined to be less than 1/4 mile from the USGS strong motion accelerometer which is located approx-i=ately - one (1) mile northwesc. of the nnelae 6e4'4ty. Tha.USGS.has.

reviewed the data recorded by the strong motion accelerometer and has infor=ed the Applicant that this event produced peak ground acceleration values of .13g and .24g in the two horizontal directions and .17g in the vertical direction. The total time duration of ground motion exceeding

.10g,was .3 second.

For completeness, I would also note that a second seismic event occurred on October 27, 1978 which had a value of 2.5 on the Richter scale. However, in as much as your staff has indicated that seismic events of 2.5 Richter value or less need not be reported except through routine reports, this pro-cedure is being followed in that case.

Both of these events the facility and are of tele [s[gnificance.re wep vithin the seismi eyt ly yours, E. . s MB'J:EHC:rh 7 9 012 5 0 J23 0
