20555 Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket Nos. 50-440; 50-441 Bedrock Deformation in the Perry Intake Tunnel

Dear Mr. Varga:

During the mapping and geologic investigation of the Che6rin shale in the Perry Cooling Water Intake Tunnel excavation, a bedrock fault was discovered.

The fault was intersected by excavation during the week of April 17, 1978, but could not be observed until April 25, 1978, subsequent tc the a cancement of the t,unnel machine.

Our consultants, Gilbert Associates, Inc., have investigated the bedrock deformation and have prepared a detailed report on the observed fault which is attached for your information. We concur with the conclusions of our consultants which include, in part, that the tunnel fault is attributable to glacitectonic deformation, is similar to the structures exposed in the onshore excavations, and is neither earthquake related nor capable.

Therefore, our conclusions as to the suitability of the founding bedrock are not changed.

We welcome your review of the attached report and would appreciate any co=ments you may have.

Inasmuch as our construction schedule indicates that concreting of the intake tunnel will begin in, early August,1978, further investigation of the faulted area, if required, should be ca=pleted by that time.

Therefore, your timely review of the attached report will be appreciated.

If you desire further information concerning the bedrock deformation, please let me know.

Very truly yours,

}
