Omaha Public Power District 1623 HARNEY s OMAHA. NESRASMA 68102 8 TELEPHONE S36 4000 AREA CODE 402 January 8,1979 Director of :Iuclear Reactor Regulation ATT'i: Mr. Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch To. h U. S. :Tuclear Regulatory Commissicn Washington, D. C. 20555

Docket :To. 50-285 Gentlemen:

In accordance with Amendment :To. 40 to the Fort Calhoun Station Operating License :To. DPR !+0, please find enclosed five (5) copies of a report entitled " Fire Detector Analysis, Fort Calhoun Station Unit :lo. 1". '"he report provides the criteria and basis for the location of fire detectors and supersedes, in its entirety, applicable secticns of a report previously submitted to the Cc=missien entitled

" Fire Protection Program Review, Fort Calhoun Unit".

The enclosed report proposes installing approximately one hundred and fifty (150) = ore fire detectors than does the previous report and the Corrission's SER. These revisions to the District's original prc-gram were necessitated when it was discovered, after careful re-evalua-tien, that the originally proposed fire detector system might centain certain deficiencies.

Since the District has increased the secpe of this task signifi-cantly, causing many detector locations to be inaccessible during pcwer cperatien, it is expected that installation and testing of the entire detector system will take longer than originally anticipated and should be completed by April,1980. The Commissicn is respect-fully requested to provide a timely review of the enclosed report.

Installatica vill ccc-ence after the staff's approval. An Applica-tien for Amendment co 7acility Operating License will be submitted to the Ccrmissicn, under separate cover, to reflect the revised schedule.

Sincerely,,

.\'
