Oyster Creek Unit I DN 50-2I9 ~ forked River, New Jersey subject: VNCONTROLLED RELEASE Of RADI0ACTIVL CHROMATF.D WATER At 3:10 PM Merch 24, 1980, the licensee reported via " Hot Line" that opproximately 160 gallons of chromated water leaked nnto the ground at the chromated water storage tnnk location. Regica I was inforned of the " hot line" coil at 3:30 PM. The water leaked from the moat surrounding the tank through a norms 11y closed valve. Water was previously (March 22) collected in the moat when a filter was drained in preparation for filter replacement and processing of water to f rom an old tnrus sample, were approximatc1,, 310-{ill the torus. Activity levels, 137). UCl/ml (Cnbalt-60 and Cesium-The licensee is currently taking soil and water samples to determihe true activity levels and actual volume of water leaked. All contaminated, oil will be excavated and pinced in drums. No off site releases are expected fenen this event. Media interest is expected due to public interest in this facility. The licensee is censidering a press release. but will respond to inquiries.
