DUQUESNE LIGHT COMPANY Beaver Valley Power Station a

Narrative Summary Of Operating Experience - February, 1979 bate Event February 1 and Station was in Operational Mode 1 at 30% power level due to February 2 a packing failure on the 1A Main Feedwater Regulating Valve.

Axial nuclear flux tilt penalty of 145 minutes was accumulated so power level was maintained less than 50% to clear the penalty. Commenced power escalation to 50% power at 0545 hours0.00631 days
0.151 hours
9.011243e-4 weeks
2.073725e-4 months
.

Penalty was cleared and power escalation commenced at 0210 hours0.00243 days
0.0583 hours
3.472222e-4 weeks
7.9905e-5 months
on February 2. The 1A Heater Drain Pump [SD-P-1A] was i

removed from service because of problems with the pump seals at 1000 hours0.0116 days
0.278 hours
0.00165 weeks
3.805e-4 months
. ,

February 3 and Station was in Operational Mode 1 with the reactor at full power.

February 4 l February 5 The station was at full power until 1434 hours0.0166 days
0.398 hours
0.00237 weeks
5.45637e-4 months
. The 1C Beactor Coolant Pump had a spurious trip during the troubleshooting of the 4KV motor overload thermal relays, causing a reactor trip.

The reactor was critical at 1548 hours0.0179 days
0.43 hours
0.00256 weeks
5.89014e-4 months
and the main unit was synchronized at 1636 hours0.0189 days
0.454 hours
0.00271 weeks
6.22498e-4 months
.

February 6 and Station in Operational Mode 1 with the reactor at full power.

February 7 Commenced power reduction at 2000 hours0.0231 days
0.556 hours
0.00331 weeks
7.61e-4 months
to permit repacking the 1B and 1C Main Feedwater Regulating Valves, stabilizing at 25%

power by 2115 hours0.0245 days
0.588 hours
0.0035 weeks
8.047575e-4 months
. Because of inability to achieve tight shutoff with the manual isolation valves around the feedwater regulating valves, the unit was taken off the line at 0037 hours4.282407e-4 days
0.0103 hours
6.117725e-5 weeks
1.40785e-5 months
on February 7. Repacking and valve checks were completed and the main unit was synchronized at 0513 hours0.00594 days
0.143 hours
8.482143e-4 weeks
1.951965e-4 months
. At 0745 hours0.00862 days
0.207 hours
0.00123 weeks
2.834725e-4 months
, power was reduced below 50% when the delta flux remained outside the target band more than 60 minutes. The delta flux penalty was less than 60 minutes by 2115 hours0.0245 days
0.588 hours
0.0035 weeks
8.047575e-4 months
, and a reactor power increase was commenced. Reactor power had reached 96% by 2300 hours0.0266 days
0.639 hours
0.0038 weeks
8.7515e-4 months
.

February 8 and Station in Operational Mode 1 at full power.

February 9 February 10 Station in Operational Mode 1 with reactor at full power. At 0146 hours0.00169 days
0.0406 hours
2.414021e-4 weeks
5.5553e-5 months
, power level was reduced to 60% because the heater drain tank level controller [LCV-SD-106B] was malfunctioning.

Power increase was commenced at 1015 hours0.0117 days
0.282 hours
0.00168 weeks
3.862075e-4 months
after controller repairs. A suspected tube leak in the main condenser section A was reported at 1520 hours0.0176 days
0.422 hours
0.00251 weeks
5.7836e-4 months
and, at 2040 hours0.0236 days
0.567 hours
0.00337 weeks
7.7622e-4 months
, power was reduced to 70% to isolate the suspected leak. When the condenser section had been isolated, power was increased to 95% power level.

, . Narrative Summary Of Operating Experience - February, 1979 (continued)

Date Event February 11 Station in Operational Mode 1 with the reactor at 95% power, increased to maximum by mid-day. Experienced problems with the heater drain pump discharge control valve [LCV-SD-106B) at 1536 hours0.0178 days
0.427 hours
0.00254 weeks
5.84448e-4 months
. Reduced power to 76% during controller repairs.

At 1710 hours0.0198 days
0.475 hours
0.00283 weeks
6.50655e-4 months
, increased power to 90%. Power level was maintained at 90% due to the unreliable operation of the heater drain system level controller.

February 12 Station in Operational Mode 1 with the reactor at 90% power.

Load increase to 100% power was started at 1442 hours0.0167 days
0.401 hours
0.00238 weeks
5.48681e-4 months
after venting the 1C Cooling Tower Pump.

[LCV-SD-106B] required reducing power to 75%.

February 14 to Station in Operational Mdde 1 at 76% power. Increased to 90%

February 23 power at 1300 hours0.015 days
0.361 hours
0.00215 weeks
4.9465e-4 months
on February 14. Maintained a 90% power level.

February 24 and Station in Operational Mode 1 at 90% power. The Ohio River February 25 elevation exceeded 670 feet at 0110 hours0.00127 days
0.0306 hours
1.818783e-4 weeks
4.1855e-5 months
, so the two-hour surveillance measurements were started. Maintained 90% pcwer and river flood watch surveillance.

February 26 Station in Operational Mode 1 at 90% power with the flood watch surveillance in effect. The Ohio River level reached 680 feet at 0633 hours0.00733 days
0.176 hours
0.00105 weeks
2.408565e-4 months
and preparations for an orderly shutdown commenced.
