Merch 22, 1979 EF2-46,125 Mr. James G. Keppler Regional Director Directorate of Regulatory Operations Region III U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comulission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Keppler:

Reference:

Reporting of Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Deficiency to Mr. H. S. Phillips on February 23, 1979

Subject:

10CFR50.55(e) Deficiency Report on Handling Damage to Core Spray Pump Motor Pursuant to the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e), Item (3), this interim report is being filed as an official follow up to our discussion with Mr. H. S. Phillips at the Fermi 2 Site on February 23, 1979.

During this discussion Mr. Phillips was advised that a skid support-ing Core Spray Pump Motor (plant identification number E21-01-C001-D), had collapsed when the pump motor was being loaded onto a trailer, causing the shaft to become lodged in the trailer bed.

There was no visible damage to the motor.

Presently the pump motor is in storage at the Fermi 2 Site awaiting return to General Electric (G.E.), the manufacturer / supplier. G.E.

will disassemble the pump motor to determine if any damage has occurred to the bearings and their support housings. Additionally, the motor will be test run to assure that the motor's dynamic balance is within acceptance criteria.

Within the next 120 days we will issue a second interim status report if the disassembly and inspection is not complete, or a written report if damage was found to be significant enough to be classified as a reportable deficiency. If, within this time period, we determine it not to be reportable under 50.55(e), we will notify your office.

Sincerely yours,
