Dear Mr. Hendrie:

Recent events in the area of nuclear generation have crated concern for the safe operation of nucleaf power plants in Connecticut.

There are currently three operational units in our state, two of which are down at this time for refueling. These particular units are Millstone I and Millstone 11. Millstone 1 is of a similar type to those at Three Mile Island and Oyeter Creek.

Before these plants are allowed to go back on line. I am requesting your full assurance, as Chairnan of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, that these unit.s will be operating as safely as poxxible. Specifically, I am requesting

      • Assurances that actions to be taken by licensees under order of the Nucle.ar Regulato.'y Commixsion Informsuon and Enforcement Bulletins 79-08,79-08A. 79-0613 and 79-08 have been fully implemented by the licensee of the twc planta in question;
    • 'laformation concerning other directives or recommendations from the NRC or troca the reactor and equipme.nt manuf.acturers, reEarding (bc safe operation of these units; in addition, your opinion as to whether these directives or recornmendations have been followed:
    • T.nowledge of other actions the Nuclear Regulatory Commission anticipates taking concerning nuclear plant operations, equipment and training p:ograms as a result of the Three 11ile Island accident and other nuclear incidents;

"* Knowledge of any problems we may anticipato with our nuclear power plants in the near and long-term future.

I an specifically asking for your written reply to the issuen I have raised, before the Millstone I and llillstone II units go back on line. At the same time, munilar assurances concerning the Connecticut Yankee unit and safety concerns involved in the current construction of Millstone III would be most helpful and appreciated.
