ENVIRONMENTAL RADIATION MEASUREMENTS NEAR THE THREE lilLE ISLAND (TMI) NUCLEAR STATION At an August 15, 1984 Canission neeting involving oral presentations by the TMI-l restart parties, Mrs. Marjorie Aamodt infomed the Connission of a relatively high radiation neasurement she had taken sonewhere in the vicinity surrounding the TMI site.
Specifically, Mrs. Aanodt noted that she had measured "10 tines background" dth a Geiger counter. Mr. Noman Arnodt suggested that this measurenent, a relatively recent one, could be used to back-calculate environmental radiation levels existing at the time of the March 1979 accident.
On August 30, 1984, the staff contacted Mrs. Aanodt and offered assis-tance to monitor the sane location (s) where she had identified relativc' <
high environnental radiation levels. The staff also offered to invite local representatives from the Environnental Protection Ager.cy (EPA) and the Connonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Environnental Resources (PA DER). !!r. and Mrs. Aanodt agreed to take NRC, EPT and PA DER to three locat ions fearth-Northwest of the 1111 site. Confidentiality for the names of the residents at these locations was requested by the Aanodts.
At each of the three locations, the MRC, EPA and DER representatives conducted infomal field surveys with portable instrunentation designed to nonitor ganna and beta radiation. Radiation levels at these locations were appenximately 8-12 nicroRR.r (ganna), with e naxinum reading of necr 15 microR/hr. An alpha survey conducted ct one location showed fluctuations near the lower detection lesel of the instrunent, but these could not be duplicated.
No determination could be nade of the presence of radioactivity aLove background levels at any location. Radiation h lO2LooO2 u

Chaiman Palladino and Connissioners levels purported to have existed could not be located en August 30, 1984.
(HOTE: The Aamodts were unable to bring the radiation survey instrument used in their identification of higher than background environmental radiation levels.)
In addition to field surveys, soil samples were collected at each location and a water sample was taken at one location.
Garma spectro-scopic results indicate the presence of naturally occurring radioisotopes and levels of Cs-137 cc:ssistent with weapons testing fallout documented for the Srea. The water sanples showed no quantifiable radioactivity, although trace indications of Cs-137 and Co-60 were found.
The samples are teing analyzed for alpha, beta and transuranics.
(Samples were obtained and analyzed as follows; NRC - one soil sample, EPA - six soil sampler. and two water samples, and PA DER - two soil samples and one water sample.)
In conclusion, neither the NRC, EPA nor the PA DER were able to confim the presence of greater than ba::kground radiation levels at locations identified by the Aamodts. These results, associeted with an environ-nental monitoring effort of linited scope, are in good agreenent with the results being obtained by broad scope envirornental monitoring programs run by EPA, PA DER, the licensee and NRC. Additional results of ongoing sample analyses wili be reported if any results are found which differ from those report'A above.
