SUBJECT:

SUPPLEMU:' !. %:E INFORMATION FR*VIDF9 IN PMPD NOTIF! CATION 90.83-147 (CATED OCTOREE 25,1983)

RELATED TO METAL FILES IN D CSM GENERATOP.E DCARf, NOTIFICATION NO.84-097)

In accordance with present NRC procedures for hon d Hotificatiord, the followirg new information is being provided for your information. This new information supplements the information provided in Board Notification No. 83-14'l dated October 25, 1983, related to metal files in the diesel generators at Catawba Nuclear Station.

On March 15, 1984, Duke Power Company (DPC) submitted a final report on the one metal file fund in each of two diesel generators designated IP and 2A.

The M generatcr war damaged but the 2A generator was not. Transamerica Delavel, Inc., of Oakla.1d, California supplied the four diesel generators des 1gnated 1A, M. 2A and 2B utilized at the Catawba Nuclear Station.

Parscn Peebles/ Electric Products of Cleveland, Ohio, manufactured the four generators.

The IP generator stator was damaged during the diesel preliminary checkout tnd rotation of the diesel, due to the file in the air gap between the rotor and stator. Another file was found in generator 2A during the preoperational inspectier:, prior to roution, and consequently, no damage occurred.

Tha IB generator stator was reptoced by the 2A stator. The IB stator will be rebuilt and used in lieu of the 2A s+3ter.

The expacted completion date is June 1, 1984.

Fased on the at.sumption thn a file could have reraained undetected in the geaerator internals, this situation could have compromised the diesel gener-ator's ability to provide emergency power as required.

Te determine the origin of the files, DPC had multiple analysis performed on paint saaples obtained freru th? files (IB broken file pieces and 2A intact file) h405170387)

s

-E-and the generator 1B and 2A internals. TM analysis report states that tFa paint samples from the files and the generators are chemically identical.

DPC's position is that the origination of the files was at the Person Peebles/ Electric Products fecility. The staff is following up on the generic applicability of this matter, and concludes that this issue: is resolved for the Catawba station.
