Charles G. Long, Chief, RFB-3, DEL Brian K. Crimes, Reactor Project Br No. 3 Division of Reactor Licensing FAA HEARING ON THREE MILE ISLAND COOLING TOWERS, DOCIET 50-289 I received the attached " Determination of No Hazard to Air Navigation" from the New Tork office of the FAA on May 10, 1968. The cooling towers at the Metropolitaa Edison Thrse Mile Island site will exceed obstruction standards in the FAA regulations, Part 77 as applied to Olmsted Airport and a hearing was therefore required. The finding was that (1) the structure would have no adverse afia'c'ti'on aeronautical operations, procedures or mininas flight conditions and (2) that Metropolitan Edison will cooperats with the Pennsylvania Aaronautics Commission if the cooling tower effluent proves to be a problem.
I understand tLat one solution being considered would be to install additional facilities to operate the reactor on a onca-through basis for short periods if the fog fross the cooling towers threatened to restrict airport operations.
