EI&CSB DESCRIPIION OF REQUEST:
Three Mile Island Unit 1 (TMI-1) has two of the Westinghouse-Euffalo motors of the group found to have slow starting characteristics.
In response to an inquiry by Regulatory Operations (RO),
Metropolitan Edison Company wrote to Dr. Knuth of RO on February 4, 1974 the attached letter justifying the use of these two notors, without modification, to power the two reactor building spray pu=ps.
On February 21, 1974 RO asked Reactor Licensing to evaluate this natter (see attached memo from K. Seyfrit to A. Schwencer). After some internal discussion with Technical Review we asked the applicant on March 29, 1974 to submit a reanalysis with corroborating test data (see attached letter from A. Schwencer to t.he licensee).
The licensee has responded with the attached Metropolitan Edison Company letter of May 14, 1974. We request

Hendrie MAY 2 81974 that you review the entire matter, includin; this latest response, and determine whether it is acceptable to rely en these spray pump moters as they are, or whether they should be repaired or replaced. Please note that since they are containment spray pump motors, the exact starting eine is not significant; our concern should be focussed en their reliability.
