July 6,1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-181B This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

PIPE CRACKS IN STAGNANT B0 RATED WATER SYSTEMS (UPDATE)

Ultrasonic testing of four safety related stainless steel piping systems has disclosed what appear to be additional crack indications.

The testing is a continuation of the examinations described in Preliminary Notifications PNO-79-181 and PNO-79-181A..To date, 651 welds have been tested with 137 exhibiting indications.

The affected systems include the spent fuel cooling, decay heat removal, reactor building spray, and makaup and purification water.

The cracking seems to be limited to systems containing stagnant borated water.

The licensee submitted Licensee Event Report 79-Oll/03L-0 on this subject on June 30, 1979 a ' is continuing his evaluation.

Media interest is expected because of the recent Three role Island Unit No. 2 Ircident.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed.

NRC issued a press release on this problem on June 21, 1979.

Region I will respond to additional inquiries.

The licensee does not plan an additional press release.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurence by telephone from an NRC Inspector on site at 2:30 p.m. July 6, 1979.
