Dear Sir:
Subject:
Response to I&E Bulletin 79-14 As you are aware, the design of the Yankee Nuclear Power Station did not requ're rigorous analysis of piping systems for the effects of seismic events. The piping design codes of that era relied on establishing conservatism by limiting known loads to a small percentage of total allcwable stress. The location of piping supports was established through the use of chart methods by field engineering personnel.
Yankee has completed a piping support inspection as part of our response to I&E Bulletin 79-02 Since the piping supports at Yankee Nuclear Power Station are constantly loaded, demonstration of proper support location and design is evidenced by the lack of any observed piping system or support distress.
Furthermore, as part of the Systematic Evaluation Program (SEP) effort, Yankee has initiated a program to seismically analyze selected safety related piping at the Yankee Nuclear Power Station. The initial part of this effort which is to develop computer models of piping systems based on as-built geometries will be completed by the end of the 1980 refueling outage, which is scheduled for April 1980. This schedule is consistent with SEP requirements.
We trust this program adequately addresses the concerns of ;he.I&E Branch and SEP Branch.
Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us.
Very truly yours, YANKEE ATOMIC ELECTRIC COMPANY Robert H. Groce JRH/smw Licensing Engineer 79.0'82 70sq
