70-2838 APPLICANT:

The Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company (CGE)

FACILIT:

William H. Zimmer Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 (ZPS-1)

SUBJECT:

LICENSE AMENDMENT APPLICATION DATED APRIL 12, 1979 Backaround CGE is licensed under NRC Materials License No. SNM-1823 storage of fuel and accessories for eventual use in ZPS-1, and for the use of a Pu-Be i

neutron source for calibration purposes.

In the subject amendment request CGE wishes the license revised with regard to the types and capacities of fuel handling cranes to be used in connection with receipt and storage of fuel assemblies.

Discussion A fuel assembly weighs about 685 pounds and a loaded metal shipping container about 1900 pounds. The cranes to be used for moving containers and assemblies are appropriately rated for these loads.

It is noted that while the dropping of a container or of an assembly containing unirradiated uranium would cause additional expenses, there would be little if any radiation hazard involved.

Recommendation On the basis of the above I recommend approval of the applic' tion.
