APPENDIX A For the Contract period September 1,1979 through August 31, 1980 Article A-I RESEARCH TO BE PERFORMED BY CONTRACTOR (a)

The unclassified scope of work under this$ontract entitled, " Distribution of Coefficients for Transuranic Elements in Aquatic Environments" is as follows:

A.

Complete studies on determining distribution coefficients for Strontiun-85, Cesium-137, Cobalt-60, Rutheniun-106, Cesium-137, Americum-241, and Curium-244 on selected marine, estuarine and freshwater sediment-water systems.

B.

Determine effects of pH, sediment concentration, and surface area forthe differing sediment types.

From this information, determine correlation coefficients between Kd values for each radionuclide and other variables.

C.

Characterize sediment types and establish effects of sediment surfaces, ion exchange capacity and other parameters on natural sediments previously collected.

D.

Complete studies to determine effects of selected organic ligands on distribution coefficients, 5trontiun-85, Cesium-137, Cobalt-60, Rutheniun-106, Cesium-137, Americum-241, and Curium-244 for marine, estuarine, and freshwater systems.

E.

Complete studies on determining distribution coefficients on organic detritus in seawater.

F.

Complete all work as previously proposed for fiscal year 77, 78, and 79.

G.

Prepare topical reports where appropriate and a final report.

(b) The Principal Investigator expects to devote the following approximate amount (s) of time to the contract work:

W. R. 3chell:

42% of his time for 12 months T. H. Sibley:

75% of his time for 12 months 1185 075
