SCOPE OF WORK ELECTRICAL, INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL SYSTEMS SUPPORT TASK: ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF CLASS IE EQUIPMENE BACKGROUND On February 8,1979 the NRC Office of Inspection and Enforcement issued IE Bulletin 79-01l entitled, " Environmental Qualification of Class IE Equipment." This bulletin requested that licensees for operating power reactors complete within 120 days their reviews of equipment qualification begun earlier in connection with IE Cie cular 78-08.

The objective of IE Circular 78-08 was to detemine whether proper documentation e::isted to ve rify that all Class IE electrical equipment would function as required in the hostile environment which could result from design basis events.

The licensee's reviews are now essentially complete and the NRC staff is making preparations to begin its evaluation of the results.

In order to facilitate the evaluation, a set of specific guidelines for environmental qualification of Class IE electrical equipment in operating reactors is being prepared.

The,bjective of the wu k scope described below is to prodde the NRC staff with information and general technical support in the fie6d of materials properties to support the development and initial application of the guidelines.

SCOPE Provide general engineering consultation and technical support in the field of materials engineering.

Specific areas of interest will include, but not be limited to, the following:

(1) identification of materials subject to significant radiation damage effects; (2) identification of materials sabject to significant degradation due to themal aging; (3) evaluation of materials accelerated aging techniques; (4) evaluation of environmental qualification testing techniques; and (5) gencral critical review and comment on proposed acceptance criteria for equipment qualification. The contractor may be required to seek outside technical support through separate subcontracts to organizations with particular expertise in specialized areas of inquiry.
