SERIAL: GD-79-165 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTENTION:
Mr. T. A. Ippolito, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 3 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.
20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT UNIT N00. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324 LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 AND DPR-62 FIRE PROTECTION PROGRAM AND DELETION OF REQUIREMENT TO INERT PRIMARY CONTAINMENT
Dear Mr. Ippolito:
Carolina Power & Light Company's letter of May 10, 1977, to Mr. B. C.
Rusche submitted additional requirements for our fire protection program which would be necessary only if we do not operate with an inerted primary containment.
(
Reference:
BSEP Fire Protection Program Review APCSB 9.5-1).
The proposed installations provided detectors and oil collection systems for the reactor coolant recirculation pump motors.
Carolina Power & Light Company has not completed its response to the NRC questions concerning deinerting forwarded to us in Mr. Karl R. Goller's letter of October 26, 1977, and has, therefore, not received your approval for operation of the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant Units 1 and 2 without inerted primary containment. Because this approval has not been received, we do not plan to itystall the proposed reactor coolant recirculation pump motor fire protection system as originally planned during the upcoming Brunswick refueling outage. We will, however, install these modifications prior to power genera-tion without an inert containment.
Yours very truly,
.E Senior Vice President Power Supply DCS/TCM/mf 411 Fayetteville Street
