SUBJECT:

SITE VISIT TO GRAND GULF NUCLEAR POWER PLANT PLANT NAME: Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 DOCKET NUMBER:

50-416 and 50-417 On Tuesday, March 6, 1979, I visited the Grand _ Gulf Nuclear Station for an onsite inspection of the meteorology program. Accompanying me on the visit were L. Dean, W. Hayes, F. Killar, L. Moulder and Bill Punci from Mississippi Power and Light Company, and P. Wan and M. Archdeacon from Bechtel.

Initially, we discussed the FSAR acceptance review questions and the wind speed data collected by the MRI Air Bearing Anemometer.

I then visited the location of the 49.4 meter meteorological tower and the meteorological instrumentation in the shed adjacent to the tower. The area around the tower was flat and grass covered with the nearest trees approximately 100 meters away in the north direction. These trees were about 10 meters high.

Approximately 120 meters to the East were trees about 20 meters high along with a hill about 10 meters higher than the base of the tower.

I then took a tour around the periphery of the site to examine other topographic features in the vicinity of the plant. The most notable feature was a 15-20 meter bluff about 1/3 of the way from the plant to the Mississippi River. Below the bluff the area was quite flat while above the bluff the area was hilly.

3 EN.,L. G. Hulman I was informed that the current meteorology program would be discontinued shortly after my visit. An entirely new program would be installed (except for the tower) and would begin operating approximately 6 months before the plant becomes operation.il.
