FACILITY: Carolina Power and Light company Brunswick, Unit 1 Docket No. 50-325 Southport, North Carolina SUEJECT:
REACTOR SCRAM FROM TURBINE GENT.RATOR TRIP At 1:35 p.m. on November 20 a reactor r rip nteurred frc= 907. power due to a fault in the exciter of the main generator.
Reactor Core Isolation Cooling (RCIC) was automatically started on vessel low water level and tripped on over-speed and was r.anually re: tarted. High Pressure Coolant Injection (HPCI) was under a surveillance test at the time of reactor t rip, but was ra turn ed to service and placed in operation ca::aclly. The unit was placed in cold shutdown to investigate the ca us e of the reactor trip and to determine why RCIC tripped on overspeed.
Media interest is anticipated. A news release is planned by the licensee. The NRC does not plan to issue a news release. The State of North Carolina las been notified.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from licensee at 2:10 p.m.
on Novembe r 20, 1979.
