Docket 50-285

Dear Mr. Stello:

As requested by NRC Inspection and Enforcement Bulletin 79-01, dated February 8,1979, the Omaha Public Power District hereby gives 24-hour notice that certain safety-related electrical equipment installed at the Fort Calhoun Station has failed to meet environmental qualification criteria.

Specifically, stem-mounted limit switches, providing valve position indication, located on pneumatically operated containment isolation valves are not qualified.

Several of these switches were identified in an OPPD letter to the Commission dated March 22, 1978, responding to NRC Inspection and Enforcement Bulletin 78-04, dated March 22, 1978.

As reported in our letter of March 22, the District has performed a detailed safety evaluation, assuming complete failure of these limit switches, and concluded that the operability of associated safety-related valves is not impaired and therefore containment isolation capability remains intact.

Consequently, the health and safety of the public is not jeopardized.

A detailed written report addressing this subject will be submitted within 14 days.

Sincerely, tj

'YlO
