Virginia Electric and Power Company North Anna Power Station, Unit No. 1

Attachment:

Page 1 of 1 Docket No. 50-338 Report No. 79-005/0lT-0

Description of Event

On 1-29-79, while cooling down Unit 1 (Mode 3) during a forced outage, it was determined that the mufflers for the Unit 1 diesel generators ar' not seismically supported nor missile protected as required by section 3.2 of the FSAR.

Probable Consequence of Occurrence:

Two fully redundant diesel generators are assigned to Unit I to energiie the emergency hises in the event of a total loss of offsite power to permit functioning of structures, systems and components important to safety.

Failure of a muffler could, under proper circumstances, prevent diesel operation; however, the possibility that both units would be affected at the same time is remote.

The unit was in Mode 5 at the time the problem was discovered and remained in this mode until it was corrected. As a result, the health and safety of the general public was not endangered.

Cause

The failure to seismically support or missile protect the diesel generators exhaust mufflers during construction.

Immediate Corrective Action

The mufflers were removed from the exhaust manifold and a brace was added to hold the diesel exhaust piping.

Scheduled Corrective Action:

An engineering study to determine the final corrective action is currently being undertaken.

Action Taken to Prevent Recurrence:

No further action required.
