Dear Congressman Spence:
I am pleased to respond to your July 17, 1984 letter to Chainran Palladino in regard to Mr. Putnam's letter to you concerning the completion and startup of the Shoreham Nuclear Plant.
Let me assure you that the NRC is vigorously pursuing completion of the regulatory review required for this plant. At this time, three separate Atomic Safety and Licensing Boards have various aspects of the Long Island Lighting Company's (LILCO) operating license application before them in formal hearings. The issues under consideration include the adequacy of LILC0's emergency plan and the adequacy of Shoreham's on-site emergency diesel generators.
It is contemplated that these hearings will be completed either late this year or early next year.
I trust this reply is responsive to your request.
Sincerely, (Signed) T A Rehm
