PNS-79-80 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest sionificance.
ine information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by 1E staff as of this date.

Subject:
HAND CARRIED PACKAGE EXIT SEARCH UNCOVERED LOADED.357 MAGNUM REVOLVER On July 22,1979, at 6:20 p.m., a loaded.357 magnum revolver was discovered in a suitcase during a routine exit search.
The suitcase and contents is the property of a health physics contractor employee who had entered the site at 7:00 a.m. on the same date carrying the same suitcase.
The suitcase was searched when it was carried into the site utilizing an X-ray scanner.
The weapon was not detected, if in fact, the weapon was in the suitcase at this time of entry.
Particular attention was given to the exit search of this suitcase since the contractor employee is alledged to have stated to a member of the security force that he had for sale " Brownies" that contained marijuana at 55.00 a piece and offered to sell the " Brownies" to the security force.
The individual was not detained and the weapon was not confiscated.
The contractor employee has been barred from the site and was released by his employer on July 29, 1979.
On July 30, 1979, the licensee notified the LLEA and/or the New Jersey State Police.
A Region I Physical Protection Inspector is being sent to the site to conduct a special inspection is matter.
Media interest is expected because of the continued interest in the nuclear industry.
Tne State of New Jersey had been informed.
A press release is not planneG by the licensee or NRC.
The IAT nas been notified.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone call from NRC Resident Inspector at 8:45 a.m., 7/30/79.
