Docket No.: 50-285 Mr. Theodore E. Short Assistant General Manager Omaha Public Power District 1623 Harney Street j

Omaha, Nebraska 68102

Dear Mr. Short:

By letter dated January 18, 1977, we requested that Omaha Public Power District (0 PPD) submit an evaluation of a postulated fuel handling i

l accident in the Reactor Containment Building of Fort Calhoun Unit No.

1.

The potential consequences of an accident involving the handling of spent fuel inside containment had not been analyzed previously for Fort Calhoun. By letter dated March 18, 1977, you submitted that accident analysis which we have now reviewed.

Our calculations show that the potential consequences of the spent fuel handling accident may be greater than your estimates. 0~ur calculations do show, however, that the potential consequences of this accident are appropriately within the exposure guidelines of 10 CFR Part 100, and are therefore acceptable.

Enclosed is our Safety Evaluation.

Sincerely, Y

Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #4 Division of Operating Rea.ctors
