May 29, 1979 SERIAL NO.: GD-79-1418 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTN:

Mr. T. A. Ippolito, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 3 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT UNIT NO. 2 DOCKET No. 50-324 LICENSE NO. DPR-62 RECIRCULATION PUMP TRIP

Dear Mr. Ippolito:

In our February 2, 1979 reload submittal, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) requested NRC approval for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP) Unit 2 End of Cycle Prompt Recirculation Pump Trip (EOC RPT) modification.

Subsequent to our submittal, your staff requested and received additional infor-mation during several telephone conversations with our staff and General Electric.

At an April 30, 1979 meeting to discuss EOC RPT, we provided your staff with a copy of Plant Modification Packages78-076 and 79-065 which contain the complete modification informaton for BSEP 2 EOC RPT.

At the conclusion of this meeting, one of the NRC reviewers indicated that further review may lead to additional questions concerning the EOC RPT modification.

However, verbal requests to provide outstanding questior.s to be answered have not been successful.

This letter, therefore, requests written confirmation of NRC's review of this information (i.e., approval of BSEP 2 EOC RPT with issuance of applicable technical specification changes, or transmittal of written questions addressing the Staff's concerns on the BSEP modification). Recent telephone conversations with your staff indicated that the results of NRC's review would be documented to CP&L by June 15, 1979.

In view of the power-restrictive MCPR values that will be imposed by existing technical spec;fications at EOC minus 2000 MWD /t, CP&L requests that your review be expedited as much as possible in advance of the June 15 date.

The technical specification changes necessary to incorporate BSEP 2 EOC RPT for Cycle 3 operation were submitted to the Staff by CP&L's April 13, 1979 letter.

Please contact our staff if you have any questions on this matter.

Yours very truly,
