Hendrie Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 E Street, U.W.

Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Hendrie:

In view of the recent repudiation of the Rasmussen Report and charges made by the Union of Concerned Scien-tists, I am writing to express my concern for the saf ety of our nuclear power plants, particularly the Rancho Seco plant in my district.

According to the UCS, the emergency coolant system at the Rancho Seco plant is~in danger of failure if a fire were to destroy the two cables connecting the cooling pu.ps.

Furthermore, I am concerned about the potential errors in seismic calculations that may mean the Racho Seco station

These calcula-tions deal with the soundess of the cooling towers and the spent fuel storage building.

I would appreciate if you could answer the following questions so that I may deal with this issue from an in-formed point of view.

1.

What plans are being made to correct the safety defect at Rancho Secho and is there a timetable for comple-tion of possible alterations?

2.

What risks are currently known in keeping the station open, and under what conditions would the NRC re-quire its closing?

3.

Why were the nuclear plants designed and licensed with the fire safety hazard?

Why did the NRC delay taking action for three years after the Browns Ferry fire?

4.

What percentage of power does the station supply to the immediate.aren,__and. wha.t are the economic and social 7904130255
