March 21, 1979 Mr J G Keppler, Director Office of Inspection and Enforcement U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 TYRONE ENERGY PARK E-7470 Docket No. STN 50-434 Dear Mr Keppler IE Bulletin No.78-12A required a response within 120 days of your November 24, 1978 letter. The Bulletin discusses atypical weld material in ec Mtor pressure vessel welds.
Tyror.e Energy Park is one of the SNUPPS plants, and the reactor pressure tessel is being supplied by Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
Combus tion Engineering, Inc. is presently fabricating the Tyrone reactor pressure vessel for Westinghouse.
Combustion Engineering is giving priority to providing responses to IE Bulletin 78-12A for plants with Operating Licenses and plur.ts nearing operation; therefore, the information required by the
< Bulletin for Tyrone will not be available to NSP until late August,1979.
Subsequent to review by NSP, the information provided will be transmitted to the NRC.
It is therefore requested that the submittal date fcr the required information be extended to September 30, 1979.
Additionally, it is NSP's understanding that Combustion Engineering will provide the NRC with information regarding the Tyrone reactor pressure vessel weld material at the same time the information is provided to Westinghouse.
It is requested that the NRC not consider the Combustion Engineering submittal as a part of the Tyrone docket, since it will not have been reviewed by NSP.
