Subject:

Dresden Station Unit 1 Chemical Cleaning Response to NRC Request for Additional Information NRC Docket No. 50-10

Dear Mr. Ziemann:

Attached are revisions to the Commonwealth Edison response to Questions 1 and 9 transmitted by the NRC on May 2, 1978 concerning the radionuclide sampling program to be followed during the Dresden 1 Decontamination Project.

These revised responses were prepared after a conversation with Mr.

L. Barret of the NRC 5taff on December 11, 1978.

The wording of these revised responses reflects agreements reached in that conversation.

If you have any further questions on this matter, please contact this office.

Very truly yours,

NRC Docket No. 50-10 ATTACHMENT Question #1 Either provide adequate assurance that the decontaminated solution will contain less than 10 nanocuries/gm of transuranic nuclides or commit to measure the transuranic content of the Dresden 1 decontamination waste prior to waste shipping.

Answer After all the spent solvent has been transferred to the 150,000 gallon V-102A tank, a sample will be taken and analyzed for transuranic content. Using this analysis and the evaporator concentration ratio, the final concentrated NS-1 transuranic level will be calculated.

ATTACHMENT Question #9 Provide estimates of the curie amounts of FE-55, Ni-63, and any other non-gamma emitters of significant quantities (

10 curies) that may be encountered in the decontamination process.

Provide assurance that all liquid releases to the environment from the Dresden 1 reactor, including Dresden 2/3 if liquids from Dresden 1 are transferred to Dresden 2/3, will be analyzed for the isotopes determined above while decontamination and subsequent waste processing operations are in progress or until the expected releases of these isotopes decrease f

to less than 10 mei/yr. Analysis should consist of at least a monthly analysis l

of a composite sample of all the liquid releases over the past month, j

Answer It is not expected that any Fe-55 or Ni-63 will be transferred.from the chemical cleaning facility to Dreaden 1 radwaste or Dresden 2/3. However, the demineralizer l

discharge product will be analy::ed at the~ beginning and end of the veaste processing I'

cycle, to ensure that no Fe-55 or Ni-63 is transferred. The processihg cycle is not expected to take more than a month to complete.
