Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
In response to your letter of January ll, 1980, transmitting IE Bulletin 80-1, Carolina Power & Light Company submits the following information.
The Brunswick Plant does have hard-seat check valves. They are Velan stainless steel valves with stellite seats, which are of the spring-to-close type, rather than swing check valves. The valves are not leak tested, but they are inspected and receive routine maintenance on a refueling interval basis.
The entire system from the ADS valve operator through the accumulator and then dowr-to and including the compressors is a redundant, seismic class 1B system. Based upon this qualification, the ADS will be operable under all conditions for which it might be required, including seismic events.
Thi-conclusion and the supporting reasons were transmitted by telephone to members of the staff of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulatic:, on January 11, 1980.
Based upon the information presented above, Carolina Power &
Light Company plans no further action on IE Bulletin 80-1.
