ENCLOSURE Metropolitan Edison Company Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1 (TMI-1)
Docket No. 50-289 License No. DPR-50 Nonroutine 30-Day Report 74-02 Notification of a Deficiency in Design of the AC Control Rod Drive System Trip Breaker Cabinets 1.
Description of Deficiency A reevaluation of the seismic qualification of the control rod drive AC breaker cabinet attachment of the cabinet to the floor has revealed that the attachment of the cabinet to the floor may be inadequate to withstand the safe shutdown earthquake accaleration levels.

Corrective Action Upon notification by the vendor that a deficiency could 3.xist, a review of system design was made by Metropolitan Edison (Met-Ed) and its Architect-Engineer. Proposed modifications to implement a redesign involving additional welds and/or steel angles for the middle, rear, and front of the cabinet is being reviewed by the Met-Ed co rporate technical support staff. It is anticipated that these Lodifications will be approved in the near future; and when approved, the modifications will be made at the first opportunity.
Documentation of the modification will be available at the TMI-1 site for review on completion of the modification.
