Y)M UNION OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS 3
^
February 9, 1979 Dr. Joseph M.
Hendrie, Chairman U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

Dear Dr. Hendrie:
We have been studying some of the technical issues associated with radioactive waste management.
In this connection, we have become interested in the adequacy of procedures for radiation monitoring and control in the United Nuclear Corporation facility in Wood River Junction, Rhode Island, which is licensed by NRC.
According to Special Nuclear Material License No. SNM-777, certain quarterly and nonthly sampling and analysis for alpha and beta radioactivity in certain wells is required.
We are interested in learning whether this monitoring activity is being carried out in accordance with NRC requirements and whether radiation levels fall within limits prescribed by NRC.
Additionally, are interested in learning whether any independent monitoring we activities have been carried out around this facility by NRC, other government agencies, or independent contractors to determine radiation levels.
Sincerely yours, Daniel F.
