56-12953-01 and to the discussion of our findings held by Mr. Baird with Mrs. Lou M. Perez at the conclusion of the inspection.

The inspection was an examination of your activities related to safe and secure storage of the AECL Gammacell 220 containing radioactive Co-60 and a review of your plans for future disposition of the irradiator.

Within the scope of the inspection, no items of noncompliance were identified.

With regard to your plans for disposition of the irradiator, it is our understanding that your Department is negotiating with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited for return of the unit and disposal of the sources.

Since the unit has been in storage for eight years and is showing signs of deterioration due to storage conditions, we urge you to follow through with the necessary actions to authorize and complete this disposal.

In this regard, please let us know when a disposal agreement is finalized and the projected schedule for removal of the unit.
