Docket No. 50-245 LICENSEE: Northeast Nuclear Energy Company FACILITY: Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MEETING HELD ON JANUARY ll,1979 Representatives (attendees list attached) of Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECo) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) met in Bethesda, Maryland, on January 11, 1979, to review the program for inspection of the Feedwater Sparger during the Millstone Unit 1 refueling outage currently scheduled to begin April 28, 1979. NNECo plans to submit the program for NRC review in a few weeks after they have considered the conments made by NRC representatives during the meeting.

NNECo representatives stated that dye penetrant testing of the feedwater sparger and clad removal will be accomplished during the 1980 refueling outage. The duration of the 1980 outage will be nine weeks where as the 1979 outage is planned for five weeks.

The core spray piping will also be replaced in 1980. Contingency plans have been made so that both tasks can be completed during an extended 1979 refueling outage if the planned inspections during the 1979 outage reveal degradation that could affect the health and safety of the public.

NRC representatives reconmended that the NNECo report to be submitted in a few weeks:

o state the criteria for satisfactory ultrasonic test results; o stute follow up actions if indications exceed acceptable levels; o include a sunmary of results and conclusions from the last two inspections; o identify the flaw or crack size that might escape detection duringultrasonictesting(i.e.UTsensitivity);
