20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324 LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 AND DPR-62 REACTOR RECIRCUL, ION SYSTEM SAFE END INSPECTION PROGRAM
Dear Mr. Ippolito:
In a letter dated April 17, 1979, Carolina Power & Light Compauf (CP&L) transmitted to you t. a results of the ultrasonic (UT) inspection of the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP) Unit No. 2 recirculation system inlet nozzle safe ends. These inspections were performed during the 1979 refueling outages.
Our April 17, 1979 letter requested that the number of UT acans performed on each safe end be reduced to decrease the amount of radiation exposure to the UT technicians. Reducing the number of scans would have no effect on the final determination of safe end integrity. A confirmation of this fact was demonstrated by a test block study performed by CP&L's UT contractor, Lambert, MacGill, Thomas, Inc., as described in our April 17 letter.
This letter is to notify the staff that CP&L is proceeding with the safe end inspection program for both Brunswick units employing the reduced UT scan procedure. We will be available to discuss this inspection program with your staff if requested.
Yours very truly,
/' /
