PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION Date: November 16, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--PNS-I-79-08 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.

VEHICLE SEARCH AT MAIN GATE TO PROTECTED AREA, UNCOVERED.22 CALIBER HANDGUN At 8:30 a.m., November 15, 1979, the security guards, while performing a routine search of a tractor trailer, owned by Holmes Transport Company, Barnwell, South Carolina, scheduled to pick up a low level waste shipment, found a.22 caliber pistol and amunition under the seat of the cab.
The driver was arrested by the Connecticut State Police, Colchester, Connecticut.
The driver was later released on a $50.00 bail bond and departed with the tractor trailer at 12:00 noon, November 15, 1979.
The licensee refused the driver access to the site to pick up the low level waste shipment and accordingly notified Chem-Nuclear, Barnwell, South Carolina.
The revolver and amunition was released to the State Police.
Media interest is not expected. The State of Connecticut has been informed by the Connecticut State Police. A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC.
NRC, Region I (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone call from the licensee at 3:00 p.m., November 15, 1979.
