Dear Mr. Sutherland:
Ref: 70-824/79-6 This is in response to Appendix A of your letter of October 19, 1973.
Since the occurrence of the unusually high exposures experienced on February 5,1979, powered air respirators have been used in all hot cell entries. This type of respiratory protective equipment has a protection factor of 1000.
Exposure records of personnel making hot cell entries subsequent to beginning the use of this new equipment show no exposures to airborne radioactive material in excess of the 10 CFR 20 Appendix B, Table 1, Column 1, limits.
I feel that we are now in full compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 20.103.
Additonally, a supplied air system is being installed for use in connection with hot cell entries. This system is designed to pro-vide a higher degree of protection to Lynchburg Research Center employees than that provided by the powered air respirators.
Very truly yours, BABC0CK & WILC0X b
