IE Bulletin 79-01 North Anna Power Station Unit No. 2
Dear Mr. Stello:
This letter is in response to the subject Bulletin. " Environmental Quali-fication of Class IE Equipment". Attachment 1 provides the results of the our review of Architect-Engineer (A-E) procured Class IE equipment for North Anna Unit 2. As discussed in our earlier submittals for North Anna Unit 1 (Serial No. 90A dated July 2.1979, and Serial No. 908. dated August 13. 1979) two potentially unqualified items were identified during the review of quali-fication information. These are also applicable to Unit 2: 1. Chiller Equipment used for control and relay room air conditioning. 2. Safeguards Building Ventilation Fans Attachments 2 and 3 provide additional information on and resolution of these two items. We also stated in our August 13. 1979 letter that we had directed our A-E to review NSSS vendor supplied qualification docunentation listed in to determine the qualification status of NSSS vendor supplied equipment. We will forward the results of this review as soon as they are available. Very truly yours, hkh lddh-jW C. M. Stallings Vice President-Power Supply and Production Operations cc: Mr. James P. (Typical for all equipment listed on this page). 3. Resolution Use equipment in unaffected Unit to maintain Control Room environment. 4. Justification for Resciution in the event of a main steam line break (MSLB) in either turbine build-ing and the corresponding failure of a main steam stop valve to shut, the temperature in the control room A/C chiller room will approach 180*F at 100Z relative humidity due to a steam blowdown entering the chiller room. A/C chiller systems have not been qualified to withstand these environmental conditions. In order to maintain habitable temperatures in both Units' control roorns under the above conditions, it is necessary to operate two A/C chillers in the unaf fected unit. Continued operation of Unit 2 can be justified on the basis of always having two Unit 1 A/C Chillers, one Unit 1 emergency diesel generator and the two Unit 1 emerger.cy busses available. Since the analysis
assumes that a main steam trip valve fails to shut, no other single failure need be postulated per Regulatory Guide 1.81. Therefore, only one Unit I diesel generator need be available to operate two A/C chillers (this reguires tying emergency buses IH and 1J. /
1. Equipment Description & Mark No. Axial Flow Fans - Joy Mf g. Co., P. O. No. MA-201; 2-lW-F-71 A,B located in Saf eguards Bldg. 2. Qualification Deficiencies Equipment potentially not qualified for exposure to: 6 A. Radiation - 1 x 10 ra'a s 3. Resolution Replace with qualified motars. 4. Justification for hit Operation Until Motor Replacement Fans 2-ET-F-71A and B have been installed to provide ventilation to each recirculatir.g spray pump and safety injection pump cubicle following a design basis accident (LOCA) and subsequent loss of exhaust resulting f rom a tornado-missle which may occur 24 hours f ollowing a LOCA. In the event of a LOCA, the safeguards area ventilating fans 2-HV-F-71A and E are potentially not qualified to withstand the re-sulting radioactivity and may become inoperable. Continued plant operation until a qualified motor can be obtained is justified since the probability of a design basis accident (LOCA) followed by a tornado is less than 10E - 7. (Reference NuReg 75-057). 5. Sched ule New motors have been ordered and will be installed as soon as they are available.
