4 2. / / SMALL EFJ K LOCA Introduction In a =eeting held in Windsor on 5/27-5/28/75, Mr. Sabin of TVA expressed a c;ncern for a class of s=all break LOCA's whose depressurization rates 1 are relatively slow co= pared to those s=all breaks presented in CISSAR, Section 6.3.3.3. He worried about the possibility of inadequate H?SI flow for such breaks and also asked about the IDCA require =ents for E=- ergency Feedwater and operator actions. This trans=ittal constitutes a response to actica ites nu=ber 23 of Ref-erence 2. j, S u==a rt The results herein de=onstrate that for any cold leg break less than or equal to 0.1 ft2 in size, adequate liquid inventory is =aintained in the reactor vessel to keep the active fuel ce=pletely covered at all ti=es. The results shown in CESSAR de=enstrate that for these s=all breaks in which so=e degree of core uncovery is predicted, the ECCS criteria 3 are =et and peak clad te=peratures are less than 12000F. It has been assumed that for all breaks no operator actions are perfo=ed. At so=e later ti=e folicwing the LCCA, operator procedures for long te = cooling will be i=ple=ented. .y 4,,., 2 'Since NRC requires the assumption of loss-of-of f si:e power, main (,(: ' feedwater flow is not available. F.or breaks larger than 0.1 f-2, those presented in CCSSAR, Emergency Feedwater (EEN) was not represented and indeed was found to have little influence on the performance of such-relatively large break sizes. However, for breaks equal to or smaller than 0.1 ft2, EFW was found absolutsly necessary. For these smaller breaks,.the steam generators must remove a significant part'of t'he. decay energy gehera:ed in the core'. If they do not, then primary side re-pressurization occurs since ~the break is too small to emit all of the steam boiled off in the core. ~- 3 . Discussion Calculations of breaks 0.1 f r2 and smaller have been perf ormed with the CELEVEL code. This code was specifically written for applica:ica to i such small breaks. [ The-predicted two-phase level transien:s for several breaks.0.1 ft2 and ,As 5 smaller are shown in Figure 1. The corresponding pressure transients are given in Figure 2. These results demonstrate that although the depres-suri:stion, rates for such small sized break sizes are gradual,' adequate HPSI pump inflow is provided.to keep the core covered at all times. The Saf ety Injectica Tanks (SIT) become activated at approximately 900 seconds for :he 0.1 ft2 case. Neither the.05 f:2'nor the.005 ft2 cases resul:ed in SIT activation before the level transient is turned around. For both breaks, the level transient bot: cms out at an elevation above the top of'th'e ac:1ve fuel and recovers frcm there via RPSI inflow alone. e For all of these breaks, steam generator heat ::ansfer plays an importan: role. Since EBi is supplied to each s: cam generster, an adequa:e secen. cary liquid inventory is main:ained to support heat removal by condensa-tion of the s: cam in the U-tubes on the primary side. The SIAS cutematically starts the emergen y diesel generators which provide power to the HPSI pumps and the EW pu=ps. The total time from receipt of an SIAS to the time the HPSI pumps provide' flow is 30 seconds- (maximum). The total time delay from SIAS until Em reaches the steam generators is 45 seconds (maximum).
