UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 4

f.I h

WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 1 N N~. I MAY 3 1979 Docket No.: 50-322 Long Island Lighting Company ATTN:

Mr. Andrew 'l Wofford

'IHIS DOCUMENT CONTAINS Vice President P0OR QUAUTY PAGES 175 East Old Country Road Hicksville, New York 11801 Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

LOOSE PARTS MONITORING SYSTEM - SHOREHAM NUCLEAR POWER STATION In your letter of March 30,1979 (SNRC-373) you requested formal guidance on the type of loose parts monitu.-ing system trat would be acceptable to the staff. You stated that guidance must be provided by May 1,1979 in order to maintain your construction s:hedule.

The installation of a loose parts monitoring system that meets the guidance set forth in Regulatory Guide 1.133, " Loose-Part Detection Program for the Primary System of Light-Water-Cooled Reactors" is an acceptable method of satisfying our license requirement for the Shoreham Station. Revision i to Regulatory Guide 1.133 has not been issued yet. However, we have en-closed the latest version of this Regulatory Guide, which is being sub-mitted to the Regulatory Requirements Review Comittee for their considera-tion.

I recomend that the loose parts monitoring system for the Shoreham Station meet the guidance set forth in the enclosed version of Regulatory Guide 1.133.

If you have any questions on this matter, please contact us.

Sincerely, f{i e6b dc ef Light Watar Peactots Branch No. 4 Division of Projec'; Management
