January 26, 1979 OFFICE OF THE E

CH AlRM AN E

The Honorable John D. Dingell, Chairman Subcor:mittee on Energy and Power Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20P "

-g

Dear Mr. Chaiman:

IE As you may know, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is required, pursuant W

to Section 170i of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended, to report F

annually to Congress on indemnity operations over which the Commission

[

has jurisdiction.

The NRC, or its predecessor the AEC, has prepared and p

submitted to Congress such indemnity operations reports on or about iT April 1 of every year since 1958.

6 In addition, NRC includes very similar b.

information on indemnity operations in its Annual Report to Congress prepared pursuant to Section 307(c) of the Energy Reorganization Act of

[;j$

1974.

y{9 The NRC is considering eliminating the preparation and submittal to il Congress of the annual indemnity operations reports as separate reports.

[h Rather, the NRC proposes to include all information contained in the indemnity operations reports in its Annual Report to Congress.

.7 We Y

believe that inclusion of such information in the Annual Report to Congress fulfills the statutory requirements of Section 1701 and elimi-It nates the duplication of infomation resulting from the present method

-E of reportin.g.

If your committee wishes to continue to receive separate annual reports on indemnity operations, please so inform us.

,~

3 Sincerely,
