Zion Station Units 1 and 2 Pulsation Dampeners at Positive Displacement Pumps NRC Docket Nos. 50-295 and 50-304 Reference (a):

October 24, 1978 letter from W.

t Naughton to Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation

Dear Dr. Denton:

Per Reference (a) Commonwealth Edison Company indicated that due to problems with packing leaks data on the ef fectiveness of pulsation dampeners on Zion Station's positive displacemeric charging pumps had not been obtained, but would be in the near future.

On October 6, 1979 Southwes t Research Institute conducted a field study of the Zion Station 1C positive displacement charging pump.

The study was performed to determine if pressure pulsatisas and pipe vibratory loading were reduced with the installation of a Greer Pulse-Tone pulsation dampener.

Southwest Research Institute had performed a similar study in October 1974 prior to installation of dampeners.

The data from the 1974 Study showed maximum dis-charge pressure pulsations of 920 psi peak to peak through-out the pump's speed range.

The data from the recent 1979 Study showed that discharge pulsations had been reduced to a maximum 40 psi peak to peak.

The Greer Palse-Tone dampener was designed to provide +2% attenuation (100 psi peak to peak) at normal operating pressure.

Suction pressure pulsations and pipe vibration were suosequently reduced due to the lower dis-charge pulsations.
