Perry Nuclear Power Plant Interim Report on Omission of Class "B" Fill Waterstops

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This letter constitutes the Interim Report as required by 10CFR30.55(e) on the omission of the Class "B" Fill waterstops. The condition was reported to Region III by Mr. W. J. Kacer on Deceuber 6, 1979, in a telephone conversation with Mr. J. E. Konklin of your office.

Description of the Deficiency Great Lakes Construction Company is required, by specification, to construct a double Class "B" Fill waterstop around all piping which penetrates the Class "A" Fill surrounding the main plant buildings. The Resident Geotechnical Engineer identified that the requirements were not being implemented. The contractor initiated a Nonconfornance Report, NR-GLC 526, providing a listing of all piping and waterstops installed as of December 14, 1979.

There are 28 locations where waterstops were required. At eight locations, the double waterstops have been installed; at seven locations, single waterstops varying in width from 4' to 16' have been installed; and waterstops have not been installed at the remaining locations.

The information available is presently being evaluated so that a dis-position of the nonconformance can be provided to the contractor.

A final report will be submitted to the NRC by February 29, 1979.

Very truly yours, A
