Research Objectives Related to TAP A-40 A considerable amount of research inta design of civil structures for earthquakes is currently sponsored by the :stional Science Foundation (NSF). This support can reasonably be assumed to continue into the mid 1900s and will yield useful results in the areas of seismic input and mathematical modeling of structures. NSF is prohibited from funding work specifically related to problems peculiar to nuclear power plants.
This is where we should concentrate our effort.
Necessary long range pmgrams are in rough order of priority:
Verification of containment perfonnance under earthquake-like loading Verification of the response of other Category I structures to earthquake-like loading Design criteria for plants based on probabilistic methods Design of plants to acconmodate surface displacement Design criteria for plants based on nonlinear structural response 1750 192

Research Objectives Related to TAP A-1 The prime objective is to advance the state-of-the-art to perr.iit reliable predictions of the effects of fluid transient events. Emphasis in TAP A-1 has, necessarily, been focused on preventing or reducing the While necessary as a stop-gap measure and occurrence of water hammers.
useful in itself, this will not yield information on possible consequences and can lead to imbalanced corrective actions. Specifically, the program should assess the likelihood and severity of pressure pulses as well as response to and consequences of various postulated water hammer events.
