SUBJECT:

LONG RANGE RESEARCH PLANS (Ref. Memorandum from D. Crutchfield to S. Hanauer et.al.,

dated August 10,1979)

Long term research programs should be developed for the following:

Priority 1 Obtain data and develop methods for assessing the effects of aging on electrical equipment inside containment (emphasizing instruments and active electrical equipment).

Priority 2 A.

Determine weather there are significant differences between testing under saturated steam conditions or superheated steam conditions. - Inorder to verify that testing under saturated conditions provides sufficient conservatism when simulating MSLB accidents.

B_.

Determine if and what synergisms contribute to significant aging in electrical equipment located inside containments.

Priority 3 Evaluate the adequacy of testing equipment by sequentially exposing them to hostile environment versus simultaneously exposing them to the same environment.

Priority 4 Same studies as above except for equipment located outside containment.

Some of this work is currently being done on electrical cable, however, more emphasis should be placed on testing active components such as transmitters, lisaitswitches, valves and motors.
