Dear Sir:

Subject:

Response to I&E Bulletin No. 79-18 The following information is being furnished in response to Reference 03).

The item numbers used are identical to the numbers in your request.

1.

The plant has conducted an Engineering Survey to determine those areas of the plant where the evacuation announcement and alarm systems were not audible or visible. The areas were surveyed at maximum anticipated noise levels. The results of this survey indicated that there were some deficiencies in the plant's communications system in various high noise areas in the plant.

2.

The corrective actions being taken by the plant include:

a)

Upgrading the in-plant communications in high noise areas to assure audibility at maximum background noise levels.

b)

Installation of new speakers in areas where there previously were no installations.

c)

Installation of an evacuation tone signal that will broadcast an evacuation alarm through the plant cornunication system.

United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention:

Mr. Boyce H. Grier November 28, 1979 Page 2 d)

In vary high noise areas such as the diesel generator cubicles, flashing warning lights have been installed to alert personnel in the event of a plant emergency.

These warning lights will be actuated by an audible frequency to voltage transducer.

3.

This report is submitted in compliance with Item 3.

4.

All the corrective actions outlined in Item 2 were scheduled to be completed by December 5, 1979, however, equipment procurement lead time may delay completion beyond the December 5, 1979 target date.

The equipment necessary to complete the actions taken is expected to be on site by January 15, 1980.

We trust this survey adequately addresses the concerns of the I&E Bulletin.

If you require further information with regards to this bulletin, please contact us.

Very truly yours, YANKEE ATOMIC ELECTRIC COMPANY h.
