t DC0 VIRGINI A ELECTRIC AND POWER COMP ANY, RICHMONO, VIRGINI A 23261 December 21, 1979 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Serial No. 995/112979 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation PSE&C/JMD:mac: wang Attn: Mr. O. D. Parr, Chief Light Water Reactors Branch No. 3 Docket No. 50-339 Division of Project Management U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

We have reviewed your letter dated November 29, 1979 and the enclosures concerning separation of electrical equipment and systems.

In July, 1975, during the late phases of' electrical installation on North Anna Unit 1 and the early phases of North Anna Unit 2, Virginia Electric and Power Company (Vepco) discovered and reported to the NRC similar problems as reported by WPPSS in your enc]osure No. 1.

Vepco, at that time, established a task group to define the scope of the problems, develop additional criteria, initiate complete inspections and to initiate the design effort for rework.

Our letters Serial Nos. 599 and 836 dated 8-22-75 and 1-2-76 state the actions taken and the voluminous numbers of Engineering and Design Change Reports, Nonconformance and Disposition Reports processed under this program for the North Anna Units 1 and 2. This task was followed closely by the NRC I and E personnel and reported in Report Nos. 50-338/75-9, 50-339/75-8, 50-338/75-11, 50-339/75-10, 50-338/75-16 and 50-339/75-11.

This task group's responsibility covered all class 1E equipment and cable areas in the plant, rather than the 10% requested. It resulted in revision and clarification of guides, specifications and criteria used on the plant site, including increase training of installation and inspection personnel.

Vcpco feels assured this task has accomplished much more than the requested field audit and should suffice for same.
