This is in regard to your request for approval of routes to be used for f~

shipments of spent reactor fuel from Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Generating Station, Platteville, Colorado to Idaho Chemical Processing Plant, National l

Reactor Testing Station, Arco, Idaho, as contained in your letter of August 22, 1979.

r The route designated as the " preferred route" (primary) is judged to meet i.

regulatory requirements in accordance with 10 CFR Part 73.37 and accordingly i.

is approved. This approval in no way attests to the traffic and highway I.

safety of the route nor implies an NRC endorsement thereof fmm a traffic and highway safety standpoint. Also the approval does not guarantee that tnere will be no local or state legislation apolicable to the route that l'

restricts or prohibits the movement of radioactive materials.

l The initial arrangements with local law enforcement acencies along the route, as required by 10 CFR Part 73.37(a)(2), have been completed by the NRC staff. Data relating to these arrangements and a copy of the approved route are enclosed. This infonnation is to be incorporated into your ship-ment plan and provided to your carrier along with instructions regardino its use.

Please note that the notification requirements of 10 CFR Part 73.72 for each individual shipment still apply.
