PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION May 10, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT -- PNS-79-43 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.
FACILITY:
South Carolina Electric and Gas Company Virgil C. Summer, Unit No. 1 Dncket No. 50-395 Columbia, South Carolina
SUBJECT:
BOMB THREAT A bomb threat was telephoned to the Unit No. I switchboard operator at 11:30 a.m., May 9, 1979. The caller was an unidentified female who said words to the effect "My husband was out there to get a job yesterday and he told me there was a bomb set to go off at 2:30 p.m."
A search was initiated by the licensee and nothing was found.
The plant site was not evacuated.
The State Law Enforcement Division and County Sheriff were notified by the licensee.
The plant is under construction (70% complete) and new fuel is on site.
There has been no media interest. Region II notified the FBI and the State of South Carolina. Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans a news release.
The IAT was notified.
